Meniskus at the Brick House

I took a quick break from editing madness on a Saturday night to go check out Meniskus at the Lazy Dog AKA Brick House. I was playing with my new Nikon 35mm f/1.8G in super low light scenario. It was DARK in there! So rather than try to hide my low-ISO noise, I decided to play with it and use it as a style element. Things gettin’ crazy late at night.

Special guest Mouse Miskey gettin’ cutes on the ukelale.

Kaileidescope Window Tiles

No, I’m not done posting pictures of this window yet. If you were to look out through the window, you could barely make out the legs of pedestrians as they walk down the sidewalk on 13th street. The patterns and how they change as you alter your viewing angle is quite entrancing. Sometimes it gives me flashbacks, man.

Here are some more images from my Estes Park adventure. We ventured up to the top of Trail Ridge Road near sunset. Here are a couple landscape photos of the bare, rocky peaks covered with a light dusting of snow. The square topped peak is Longs Peak.

The Aspen verses The Pine

I love aspen groves. We have a lot of pine forests in the Front Range, and they just aren’t as pretty. If an aspen tree and a pine tree got in a fight, the pine tree would probably win. Aspen trees are lovers, not fighters. In a Miss Perennial Woody Plant competition, the aspen would take the flowers for sure. In this meadow up in Lost Antler Ranch in Estes Park, the aspens and the pines are living in harmony as far as I can tell.

Boulder Pet Photography?

Sometimes I get asked if I ever shoot pet portrait photography. Officially, the answer is no, I’ve never been hired for a paid dog or cat portrait gig. But that doesn’t mean that I couldn’t! I’m just not really sure that a viable, paying market exists for high quality scenic shots. One would think that if the interest was there, that Boulder of all places would be a good market for it. But upon searching the internet, all I seem to find are those cheesy studio shots with little dogs with selective color bows on their heads! So if there is anyone out there who wants shots of their pets in the style that I do the rest of my portraits, don’t be afraid to ask!

Body Form Photography Workshop – Class 3 – Studio Strobes

For the third class of body form photography, we shot with a single strobe with a soft box. We warmed up with some long exposure shots using just the modeling light.

Then on to some strobe shots in the black room.

But then we moved to the white room. I enjoyed this high key setup as a change of pace from the previous shoots.

And to mix things up a little bit I pushed the shadow areas of this last photo to bring in some blacks.

Body Form Photography Workshop – Class 1 – Natural Light

I signed up for a 4 session Body Form Photography class. I met the instructor, Rick Cummings, when I did the Latin Teen fashion shoot a couple months ago. Rick has a cool studio location only a couple of blocks from mine in Downtown Boulder. He is very involved with teaching classes and opening his space to photographers in the community. So I decided to sign up for Body Form 1 to study light and form in it’s purest form, on the human body. The first class was all lit solely with natural light coming in through the overhead skylight. I did not perform any photoshop, other than adjusting contrast and some cropping. If you are interested in taking a class you can check out the Body Form Workshop Website.
