Landscape Photos of the Flatirons from Chautauqua can be so boring
August 25, 2008 | Filed Under Nature, Photos | Leave a Comment

Eight million people have published shots of the Flatirons as viewed from Chautauqua Park in Boulder. Now there are eight million and one. I tried to make mine a little interesting in Photoshop. Oh, and I officially now know how to spell Chautauqua without looking it up.
Fashion Show Photography at Green Guru HQ in Boulder, Colorado

My friends at Green Guru Gear/Ecologic Designs hosted a smokin’ fashion show and a rippin’ party to celebrate the expansion of their facilities in eco-friendly Boulder, CO. You may recall that last summer I headed out the Outdoor Retailer Trade Show with these guys in their vegetable oil powered Sport Utility Ambulance.

Green Guru makes groovy cool products out of all kinds of stuff that we normally throw away. Bike tubes, fabric from Coke bottles, climbing rope, and lots and lots of vinyl billboards. The bag you see above, the runway, the backdrop, and even the outfit you see below once clogged up the landscape with marketing slogans trying to make us buy stuff. Personally I’d rather have ladies acting as billboards trying to make me buy stuff.

The finale featured a contortionist wearing an outfit made from recycled inner tubes. Can you figure out how she has gotten her leg up there? Yeah, me neither!

My newest cruiser bike - The Swing Bike
August 22, 2008 | Filed Under Cruiser | 1 Comment

I’ve been wanting my own swing bike for a really long time. The thing is, you can’t buy one, you have to make it or have someone make it for you. Well, you could buy an original swing bike, but they are kind of like kids’ bikes.
Well I finally got around to getting one made and bribing someone to do it. It’s sooooooo sweet. For those of you who aren’t bike geeks, the special thing about this bike is that there are two pivots. There is a pivot where the handlebars turn, then another headset in front of the seat tube. This allows the wheels to track in different planes. It really swings and turns fast and tight, and you can ride with one wheel on a curb and one on the street. You really have to see one in action. SOOOOOO much fun, probably even better than a Big Wheel!
Fire dancing at the Boulder Bandshell

When we were cruising last Thursday night, we happened upon a fire dancing performance downtown at the Bandshell. It was part of the Fringe Festival that has been going on. It was righteous.

I had my Canon G9 on hand, but I didn’t have a tripod for the long exposure shots. I was able to put it on the stage, but the vibrations from the drums were enough to make the images a bit blurry. But no too shabby.

And this one is pretty cool . . . it looks like a bike! I think it was their Happy Thursday tribute!

Valmont Bike Park Boulder Blog

There is a new bike park going in near my house. Super wicked cool. There is going to be a little trail system, cyclocross course, jumps and skills features, and all kinds of good stuff. They have a new blog site, HERE IS A LINK to what they have planned. A really funny part is that they have a photo of me on the trails page, that was taken by my friend Fabio. Did they buy it from Corbis? Did they steal it?
Boulder Colorado Mountain Landscapes: Snow in August!
August 18, 2008 | Filed Under Nature, Photos | Leave a Comment
I was heading down to that fashion show and there was a break in the weather. The storm that brought three and a half inches of rain to Boulder also left a blanket of snow on the mountain peaks above 10000 feet. If I was ambitious I could have gone up and gotten some powder turns in mid-August. Well, beyond ambitious I’d have to abandon my job! So I settled for snapping some pictures of the landscape. Enjoy!

Boulder International Film Festival Funky Fall Fashion Show
August 16, 2008 | Filed Under Fashion, People, Photos | Leave a Comment

I volunteered to take some photos for the Boulder International Film Festival’s KidsFringe Teen Fashion Show. Uncharacteristically for Boulder, we got rained out of our outdoor location at the Bandshell. So we had to move indoors at the last minute to Zing Salon. This wasn’t the ideal backdrop, but we made due with the small space.

I’m hoping that the kids will help me network my way into some senior portrait photo sessions. I want to do more really creative and fun photo shoots. I think that there is a big market in Boulder for high end portrait sessions where kids get really custom and artistic photos that will really make them stand out in the yearbook. I see so many senior pictures where the pro photographer takes them out and stands them next to that same tree on campus and takes a portrait. How boring! Boulder is the perfect place to find some seniors who want to do some really fun shots.

Amber and Steve’s Anniversary Photo Shoot at the Flagstaff House
August 12, 2008 | Filed Under People, Photos, Portrait | Leave a Comment

I’ve been pretty busy with the wedding shooting this summer. So there hasn’t been much time to shoot fun stuff to post on this blog. This shoot looks a lot like an engagement shoot, but it isn’t, it’s an eighth anniversary shoot, so get it straight. I asked Steve why make a big deal out of the eighth? He said he didn’t do anything big for the fifth and he didn’t want to wait until the tenth to reap the brownie points. Smart man. So they rented a limo to drive them up from Denver for a fancy dinner at the Flagstaff House. Pure Genius!

Amber and Steve were super fun to hang out with. They were havin’ a gool ol’ time and were very responsive to my stupid jokes. So much so that at times I had to try and stop them from laughing so that I could get a serious picture. Yes, I take serious pictures sometimes too.

But more often than not I like to take fun, goofy, unusual, and silly pictures. Here is the part of the program where I put my clients at risk . . . so can you just climb up here for a minute . . . the photo will be GREAT.

Strobing the Woods

I brought an SB-26 and some Pocket Wizards on this Sunday’s mountain bike ride. My little Canon G9 has a hot shoe so that you can use big boy flashes on it. I strapped it to a tree to try and get some action shots in the deep dark woods. Unfortunately most of the crew came down before I had a chance to get the exposure and flash power dialed in. Billiam is running a little hot in the above shot. Oh well, I was able to get it dialed in by the time the ladies came by.

Mountain Biking in the Indian Peaks Wilderness

I headed out on a pretty big ride this Sunday. It wasn’t actually *in* the Indian Peaks Wilderness, because that of course would be illegal, and we all know that that would never happen. These shots were just above Yankee Doodle Lake, with a nice view of the peaks in the background.

This is a great article on the current state of professional photography. http://blog.nikonians.org/martin_joergensen/2008/07/why-your-images-are-worthless.html
