Well the big news is the big turnout - 655 people, officially. That pretty much crushes the previous record of 380ish. This week is Bike Week and everyone was out in full force to enjoy a perfectly warm evening of cruising around town. I don’t know if the move to Scott Carpenter has encouraged more turnout or not, but it’s a pretty good thing that the ride start has relocated because we would have had people backed up all the way to Wahoo’s back at the ol’ Sport Garbage. The theme was red white and blue and the costume turnout was outstanding.
The ride headed out in the opposite direction as last time, heading over to 17th then veered north to try to get to our old stomping grounds. Well, lets just not do that ever again and we’ll pretend that never happened, right? 600 people quagmired in traffic lights until we were able to get up to Pearl and 15th. After that we meanered to N Boulder Community Gardens, where the ride easily encircled the entire area. Then another not so great idea to double back, which basically led to a huge traffic jam until the tail of the ride finally came through about a half hour later. After that we were led to N Boulder Park for one more sub-par decision to stop the ride and party right at the intersection of Balsam and 9th. Hey people, how about we move away from the road before partaking in various illegal activities, OK? But this was all quickly forgotten when all of the sparklers, firecrackers, flaming poi, and flamethrowers were pulled out. Hey, its not our fault that the Star Spangled Banner conjures images of bombs exploding in the air. Anyway, the Boulder PD came by for a visit and shut all that down, overall in a pretty diplomatic manner, considering this group was fairly out of control. After this stop the ride broke up substantially, yours truly was having technical difficulties involving hooks and bungee cords so I’m not sure what happened until I was able to regroup at the Tea House.
For post-ride activities, The Republic was back open for business with a reported new menu, although I didn’t make it in. Someone should blog me here an let me know how the Republic turned out.
