What the Hail?

It was Saturday afternoon and our group was filling up at our last stop before heading out of town, the Conoco in Table Mesa. Just ten minutes ago, I commented, “Those are some pretty cool looking clouds . . .” To which Wendy replied, “Yeah you know Boulder, it will threaten all afternoon then rain ten drops.” Well that turned out to be an incorrect prediction, as we witness the craziest storm any of us had ever seen.
I’ve seen big hailstorms before. I had a car seriously dented by golf ball size hail back in PA in 1990. But usually hailstorms that I’ve seen are mostly hail and very little rain. Well this storm had some pretty big hail, but the amazing part was the amount of rain that came down with it. After a few minutes the streets were literally rivers of water carrying hail pellets that looked like shredded Styrofoam. We were lucky and happened to be under the covered gas station area when the storm hit, and we were quickly joined by as many cars as could fit, all hoping to save themselves from hail damage. The storm lasted for 15 minutes or so then blew on down south, leaving in its wake a scene of winter, 2 inches of ice on the ground perfect for making slushy snowballs. On Sunday, the town is sweeping the sidewalks of all the trashed green leaves that were ripped from their branches. Anyone with delicate outdoor plants, flowers, and vegetable gardens are extremely disappointed today.
