numbers of cruisers continue to flock to the Boulder Cruiser Ride. 358 was the Official Count, but pinning a fixed number on a constantly changing group is unrealistic at best. Let’s just call it high 300 amongst friends, OK? Nonetheless, Aaron did a great job with the help of his Cruiser Issue Counter Clicker Dealio. Aaron did admit that sometimes he loses his timing of the clicker when cute girls ride by, but I’m sure that has more to do with the newness of his new toy, but I digress.
Our ride started at Scott Who Needs A Nickname Real Badly’s house, where for the 2nd week in the row we’ve had marg and guac warmups. Hot Robbie warmly received all guests at the door with a water balloon in the face, as illustrated by Music Man Ryan’s shirt stain. Most would assume that it was PBR, but it really was water. Shocking, I know. Upon leaving I had a costume bike blowout. The 4 foot Spongebob Squarepants that I had mounted on my 3 foot sissybar began shitting torn up Syrofoam bits out of his makeshift bunger. It wasn’t pretty. The photos tell the tale. Look for Spongebob to show up next week on the back of the Moto Trike with a stapled taint.
At the start of the ride Chris made his usual announcements with the help of Ryan Duzer (Doozer?). This week the announcements took a historic turn. For the first time ever, next week’s ride will begin somewhere else than the Sports Garage. There has been talk, there have been rumblings; but it is official, with numbers pushing 400, we need to begin the ride off of public streets. The final straw was an asshole employee of the Sports Garage that ran over Tony Cantrell’s mint Columbia last week in a rage because he could pull his car out of the lot as fast as he would have liked. But whatever the reason, get the word out.
Is it permanent? Who knows. Time will tell. Is it inconvienient for the Wahoo’s group? Absolutely. Once the New Mall is done the commute over there won’t be bad, there is a new bike path that goes down 30th right to the new starting local. Overall, after seeing how much fun everyone had hanging out and playing frisbee at Ebin G. Fine park last week, I think the new start is going to be a hit. When the numbers get back down to double digits, then the group will decide how to proceed. Yes, tradition is lost, but time rolls on time changes, and what was good then isn’t necessarily so good now.
The other big news was the presence of Johnny Law at the start. I didn’t see him/her personally, but the Man felt the need to assert His presence this week. I understand completely, after the underage drinking we saw last week. You can’t fuck with underage driniking in Boulder, and you can’t blame the cops for having to address the situation given all the bad press they get. Overall, everything was cool, and we all in the future need to keep it cool and on the DL. This includes at our new start location. Drinking at Scott Carpenter is NOT LEGAL. So be smart you freakin’ alkie.
This week’s route headed Out East on the bike path’s, with the first dance party stop at the industrial park. Here the real water balloon fight ensued, and I really sucked, I think I missed about everyone and even got blindsided by Bobalicious. The highlight for me was the rippin’ sunset. I got a couple pretty sweet shots with the point and shooter, particularly the Scott and Wendy portrait.
Back up the creek to the next stop at the Library. In the future, if we want to keep the group together I suggest avoiding stopping here too early. When we stop 1 block away from the bars early in the ride, we lose a lot of people. Last week it was still light out when we stopped here as I recall. Anyway, on to 6th street, where Aaron flagged us NOT to take the Justice Center circle. I bitched about it but didn’t take a stand. I suspect this is where the group broke up, but I can’t be quite sure. It gets fuzzy about this time for me, we cruised around downtown for a while and eventually wound up at the Tea House, but there were only 50 of us or so. I made a run for 7-eleven for some hydration and fuel, where I made a discovery. I usually don’t drink much dairy, but I found that Chocolate Milk kicks serious ass as a summer cruise recovery drink. Hydrating, filling, nutritious, and loaded with sugar and chocolate. Can I hear a Hell Yeah?!
Post ride festivities were at the Lazy Dog rooftop. I was late, but heard that 100-ish cruisers showed up, which is surely a record without any sort of formal organizing. Events digressed rapidly as the night wound down with some friendly arm wrestling. There must be something in the kegs at those Ball Sport Bars. Leah took the women’s catagory by surprise, and Robbie “Gun Show” Rober took the men’s division, although I made him suffer though 6 min of the Steve Z Bindi Arm Lock to get there. Thats all for this week, see you next week at Scott Carpenter where we will begin with a Swing Dismount Competion.
